Despite being the busiest passenger port in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Piraeus ferry port is easily accessible from Athens city centre by car and public transport. The 040 bus departing from Syntagma Square operates regularly and drops passengers within walking distance of the port. Alternatively, you can follow Line 1 (Green Line) on the metro for 30 minutes until you reach Monastiraki station. All ferries leaving for the Greek Islands depart from gates E1 to E10. This will be clearly signposted upon arrival.
The port city of Piraeus in Greece lies on the Saronic Gulf in the Attica region of the country and forms part of the Athens urban area, with the centre of Athens located some 12 km from the port. The centre of Piraeus is generally congested with traffic and tends not to be place where tourists would go. The area has many of the facilities you would expect of a non-tourist town: banks, public buildings, pedestrian areas, shopping streets and the like. The area around Zea Marina and Mikrolimano Harbour are perhaps the most attractive part of Piraeus and have a good selection of restaurants, cafes and bars.
Piraeus is Greece's main port and the largest in Europe and the third largest in the world. Unsurprisingly, it is the hub of Greece's maritime industries and the base for its merchant navy. Having recently undergone a refurbishment, facilities at the port have improved and include ATM's, bureau de change, restaurants, cafes, bars and a number of travel agencies selling ferry tickets. destinations served by the port include the island of Crete, the Cyclades Islands, the Dodecanese Islands, the eastern parts of Greece and parts of the northern and eastern Aegean Sea.
The Greek island of Sifnos is located in the western end of the Cyclades group of islands and is typical of the islands of the Cyclades with its traditional architecture, lovely calm beaches, pretty tavernas and hills. The island's south coast is where most of its popular beaches are located and many have soft sand, crystal clear water and good facilities. A popular attraction on the island is the lovely Monastery of Chrissopighi which is the island's protector. The most picturesque village on the island is Kastro, which is surrounded on three sides by views of the Aegean Sea, and is characterised by narrow streets, stone built houses and beautiful views of the sea. The village can trace its history back 4,000 years with evidence of its past visible in many places and includes part of its defensive wall which was built in around 800 BC.
