Oarai Guide

Oarai Ferry Port

Oarai is a Japanese town located in the Higashiibaraki District, in the northern Kanto region. The only ferry route is supplied by MOL Ferry heading to Tomokomai, another Japanese town, and sails 12 times per week, lasting around 18 hours.

What is there to do in Oarai?

For anyone who loves their sea life, the Aqua World Ibaraki Prefectural Oarai Aquarium is one of the standout attractions in Oarai. Myriad of fascinating creatures are found swimming around the engaging tanks and enclosures, and to top it off, there are widely entertaining shows that are worth the entrance fee alone. Other than the aquarium, most of the worthwhile activities are found in the uniquely beautiful outdoors belonging to Oarai. The weather rarely changes all year round, as a result tourism is at a constant steady pace throughout all seasons, so the glorious beaches are never too busy regardless of the climate. If there is a slight boost in visitors, it’s at Sun Beach where the sea is perfect for bathing and the golden sands are littered with beach volleyball games and tourists relaxing in the sun. Away from the beaches, the Oarai Marine Tower provides spectacular views of the landscape, and is fairly easy to reach via car or taxi.

How do visitors get around Oarai?

The town is so small that is possible to access the entirety of it by foot, alternatively there are taxis and rental cars readily available.
