At the southern end of Salt Spring Island, nestled between an emerald forest of ferns and pines and a broad sweep of the Georgia Strait waterway, is the picturesque village of Fulford Harbour. This laid-back community in the British Columbia region of Canada oozes with charm. The narrow streets, shaded by the leafy boughs of evergreens, are lined by quintessential wooden cabins while the small downtown district consists of shops and restaurants overlooking the glassy waters of the strait. The port of Fulford Harbour is found to the south of town. It consists of little more than a small private marina and a narrow, wooden dock that extends from the centre of the village into a calm inlet of the sea. Found at the far-end of this dock, where the platform opens up to reveal a spectacular view across to the verdant hills on the opposite coast, is a small ferry terminal kiosk. Though there are no facilities at the kiosk itself beyond a Wi-Fi access point, there are a number of shops, a short-stay car-park and a café selling food and hot drinks found close to the harbour. Only two roads feed into Fulford Harbour, both snaking up the spine of Salt Spring Island towards the other small villages of Vesuvius and Long Harbour no more than half an hour’s drive away. A bus service known as the Salt Spring Island Transit System regularly whisks passengers along this route from a stop located just outside the entrance to the pier.
