The Isle of Harris is the southern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Harris is more mountainous than Lewis and so it’s a great hiking destination and ideal for nature lovers. It’s also famous for its namesake tweed, which can be bought in the popular village of Tarbert, the island’s main settlement. The coastline has some incredible beaches, most notably the West Harris sands where you can gaze out to the uninhabited island of Taransay, giving you a true sense of peaceful isolation. The Isle of Harris is a useful gateway to the Isle of Berneray immediately to the south. From the ferry terminal in Leverburgh, there are multiple sailings every day across to Berneray’s southern coast.
Berneray is an island community in the Western Isles of Scotland, between Harris and North Uist in the Sound of Harris. With a proud heritage and gorgeous scenery, Berneray is an underrated island. The birthplace of the tallest non-pathological giant in history, it has an amazing history, with the imposing Cladh Maolrithe standing stones and the fascinating Pictish square burial cairn in Ardmaree the most popular attractions. It also boasts a picturesque landscape comprising huge sand dunes, vast plains and long stretches of sand, with the famed west beach stretching three, golden miles. Benefiting from the ferry terminal built in 1990, it’s well connected with Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris, and the nine hundred metre causeway links it with North Uist. There is a decent ferry connection from the Isle of Harris, to the north, with regular sailings every day from Leverburgh to Berneray’s terminal on the south coast.
