As of January 8th, 2025, U.S. citizens travelling to the UK for tourism, business or simply passing through UK airports will require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) if they don’t have a legal residency in the UK or a UK visa. This new rule applies to all parts of the United Kingdom, as well as Northern Ireland and any British Oversea territories.
If you visiting the UK and do not have a visa or British passport, you can apply for an ETA by downloading the UK ETA App – available on the App Store and Google Play. Please check that you are eligible for application before proceeding.
Anyone travelling to the UK for a maximum of 6 months for tourism, business or visiting relatives and friends can do so with an ETA. It also allows you to transit through the UK, including if you are not going through UK Border Patrol. If you are visiting the UK for other reasons, please check as you might need a visa instead.
The Electronic Travel Authorization costs approximately $12 (£10) per person. Everyone travelling is required to get an ETA without exception. You can apply on behalf of children and babies. Please note that this fee is not refundable under any circumstance.

ETA applications for those travelling from United States to UK can take up to 3 working days. However, some decisions may be quicker. You will receive an email confirming the decision as soon as it is complete.
Your personal ETA will last for 2 years. During that time, you can travel to and from the UK as many times as you please. However, if you get a new passport, you must also apply for a new ETA.
Just because that you have an ETA does not ensure your entry into the UK. You must still adhere to the routine security requirements upon arrival including Border Patrol and an ePassport Gate.
